Japanese cd's vs. American cd's

Personally I like the Japanese released cd's, and I think their a great addition to your collection especially if you own the U.S. version to compare it to. Japan seems to have given a bit more respect to Orleans music in that their the only country, to my knowledge, to have released Orleans (1973), Orleans II, and Grown Up Children on cd. They also released Orleans Live the full Woodstock concert and Analog men a cd that was released only in Japan.

The Japanese cd's are packaged very nicely, most of the time, including a nice booklet with lyrics, bonus tracks normally, and sometimes different cover art. They do cost a bit more than the American version and you can expect to pay at least double the price and sometimes more, but their a nice addition to have. So why the difference? My understanding is that the Japanese market is deregulated which means it may be cheaper for the Japanese citizen to purchase an American import. A way around this is to add on couple of bonus tracks and now you have an enticement to purchase the Japanese version. It seems to work because many American fans, not only those of Orleans, choose to purchase these for their collections because of the various differences and the bonus tracks.

The Obi Strip

The obi strip is a the paper strip that is usually wrapped around the left side of the cd or album cover. The purpose of these is to translate the title into Japanese and provide useful information to the consumer. If you're buying a cd that has an obi strip more than likely you're getting a new unopened cd, but if it is used and includes the obi strip you'll still pay more the cd than if didn't. Some people collect them so if their included it raises the value of the cd a bit. Below is a picture of an obi strip..
